Prior to the city formation, it was referred to as Walker Township and consisted of the land North of the Grand River. In 1962, the area was established as a city and started with a population of just 11,000 residents. The city consists of 25.48 square miles and features many retail manufacturers, furniture manufacturers, lumber yards, and plaster mines. The community has local woodworking, ceramics, and gardening groups, as well as 8 beautiful parks for residents to enjoy. The city is best known for the exceptional school system, beautifully maintained neighborhoods and ample shopping centers. It is located just six miles west of the Grand Valley State University and also features two unique monuments.
