With a population of nearly 52,000 residents, Kentwood offers many attractions and opportunities to the Kent County area. The city was first incorporated in 1967 and claimed the remaining land from the Paris Township. Kentwood is named after American jurist and legal scholar James Kent. The city consists of 20.95 square miles and is bordered by Wyoming, Grand Rapids, Cascade Township, and Gaines Township. The area’s climate is known for hot and humid summers and was once home to the historic Kentwood Mine. First opened in 1971, it was an underground gypsum mine that was owned by Georgia Pacific and operated until 2000. The city is home to several notable people, including former NHL hockey player Mike Knuble and former NBA star Loy Vaught. The area is known for featuring many craft breweries and brewery tours, gaining the title of the cultural hub of western Michigan.
